When you retire, you might dream of living in an active adult community that caters to people just like yourself. The top 55+ communities not only have a wide range of homes to choose from but are also in attractive locations and have a long list of amenities.

Whether you are looking for a championship golf course, bike and running paths, fitness centers and swimming pools, tennis and pickleball courts, or some other feature, it’s probably available. But, you don’t have to spend days or hours sifting through online listings to find the best 55+ communities. Someone has already done that for you.

The popular website 55places.com releases an annual list of the 100 most popular 55+ communities in the country. The ones that make the list offer attractive home models and have the most views, reviews, and favorites on the highly-trafficked site. In the coastal North Carolina area, two popular communities have made the list for 2021.

Brunswick Forest – Leland, NC

Located in Leland, Brunswick Forest is an active lifestyle coastal community that is just 10 minutes from historic Wilmington and about 30 minutes from the beaches. The community features 4,500 acres of lush forest and will have about 8,000 homes when complete. Single-family home prices range from the mid $200s to the low $1Ms.

There is a wide range of amenities in Brunswick Forest, including an 18,000 square-foot modern fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, biking and walking trails, and an 18-hole championship golf course with a clubhouse. The River Club at the community also offers a canoe, kayak, and small boat launch on Cape Fear and the Intracoastal Waterway.

St. James Plantation – Southport, NC

Located in Southport, St. James Plantation is a gated active lifestyle community that features resort-style living near the Atlantic Ocean. There are currently 1,800 homes in the community, with plans to have 5,000 by the time the community is completed. Homes range from the low $100s to the high $1Ms, and there are both new and resale homes in the community.

The community offers four different clubhouses that go along with its four golf courses. Residents can join any of the four clubs and are able to dine at any of the clubhouse restaurants.
